Many engineers are promoted into management because they are technically excellent. Then they discover the job has changed: success is now measured by the team's results, not their own.
If you are considering the move, these are the areas to develop.
1. Delegation
New managers often keep the interesting technical work for themselves. Effective managers delegate meaningful work, set clear expectations and check progress without micromanaging. Start by delegating a piece of work you would normally do yourself, with a clear brief and agreed check-in points.
2. Planning and prioritisation
You will have more demands than capacity. Learn to make trade-offs explicit: what will be delivered, what will be delayed and why. Simple tools — a prioritised list, a visible programme, regular reviews — help a lot.
3. Communicating with non-engineers
Clients, finance teams and executives need the implications, not the calculations. Practise summarising a technical issue in three sentences: what is happening, what it means, and what you recommend.
4. Managing risk and safety
As a manager you become accountable for how work is done, not only what is delivered. Make safety, quality and compliance part of every planning conversation.
5. Developing people
Regular one-to-ones, honest feedback and stretch opportunities build strong teams. Ask each team member what they want to learn this year and help them find work that builds those skills.
6. Commercial awareness
Understand budgets, contracts and how your organisation makes or saves money. You do not need to become an accountant, but you should understand the financial impact of your team's decisions.
Is management right for you?
Not every excellent engineer wants to manage people, and that is fine. Many organisations offer senior technical or specialist tracks. Think about which work energises you: solving hard technical problems, or helping a team solve them.
If you are weighing up this decision or preparing for a senior role, a confidential conversation with an experienced engineering leader can help you plan the transition.
