Your first job after graduation sets the tone for the next few years. These habits help graduate engineers settle in quickly and build trust.

Weeks 1–4: learn the system

  • Understand how work flows — who issues instructions, how drawings and documents are approved, and how decisions are recorded.
  • Learn the safety rules properly, especially on site or in a plant. Ask when something is unclear.
  • Keep a notebook or digital log. Write down what you learn, who to ask about what, and questions to follow up.
  • Meet people. Introduce yourself to technicians, foremen, drafters and administrators as well as engineers — they know how things really get done.

Weeks 5–8: take ownership of small things

  • Volunteer for a defined task and deliver it reliably.
  • Before asking a question, try to find the answer yourself — then ask with what you have already found.
  • Check your own work before submitting it. A short self-review catches most simple errors.

Weeks 9–12: show initiative and plan ahead

  • Ask your supervisor for feedback: what is going well and what to improve.
  • Identify one process you can improve, such as a checklist or template, and propose it.
  • Start a record of your experience for professional registration. Note dates, projects, your responsibilities and your supervisor. It is much easier to record as you go than to reconstruct years later.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Staying silent when you do not understand an instruction.
  • Promising unrealistic deadlines to impress.
  • Neglecting documentation because the "real work" seems more interesting.

Find a mentor

A mentor outside your immediate team can give you perspective, help you handle difficult situations and plan your development. If you do not have one, our career mentorship programme pairs you with an experienced engineer.
